46924Retro Albums You Recommend
1970-1971 really was a turning point for me. I was one of those guys who listened only to radio stations that playes the "Top 40" hit songs, over and over. By 1970 I was meeting friends at school who were already growing beyond pop music.

Like a magic door opening to a new world, I was being introduced to music that asked questions, elevated ideas and transported the mind. And other music was just difficult to describe.

When YES released a fourth album in 1971, the album was named Fragile (like our planets ecology).

"Long Distance Runaround" really got to me cuz I thought it was about phone service. Ohhh nooo, the song is all about religious angst of a teenager! If you made a song about religion would it sound anything like Long Distance Runaround? Truly unique music!

But this is another YES song with two parts. The second part is called, "Fish", only heard by people who bought the album because radio stations didn't like songs longer than four minutes. Radio fans only heard part one, so album owners had a bit of fun. Now I know why so many older kids used to joke, "ride the fish", back in the day.

1971 was a long time ago. Glad younger guys are "riding the fish" in the 21st century!

eddstarrMar 04, 2021View
46923Chicago band

Hey, Thank You, MM!

Everyone can hear how "Baby What A Big Surprise" gets caught in a trap ending. The song concludes by repeating the chorus over and over. But with each eteration of the chorus, the pitch of the orchestra rises. After three or four rounds the song has to fade-out quickly before the string section goes ultrasonic, LOL!

"Old Days", from 1975 doesn't have the trap ending, it maintains the same pitch throughout. Most of the songs nostalgia references pre-date me, but the spirit of the song is right on target.

eddstarrMar 04, 2021View
46922Action Figures You Had As a Kid
I had a single Jurassic Park toy throughout my entire childhood, and it was the Brachiosaurus action figure that came out with the third film. Not trying to sound ungrateful, but when picking out a dinosaur toy for a young boy why would you go for the lamest dinosaur toy from the entire line? Wouldn't some meat eater or a defensive powerhouse like the Triceratops sound more appealing to that kid? It's like everyone bringing to the park their Star Wars action figures and the only one you have is Jar Jar Binks.

Rick Ace RhodesMar 04, 2021View

46918Chicago band
Chicago has always been one of those bands that "feel" like they've been around forever. 1969 is the first time I heard their music on the radio, and they became a reliable hit machine by 1970.

"Baby What A Big Surprise", from 1977, really stuck to me. I'm not sure why, guess I just like the song because it was just before Chicago's hiatus while the world caught "disco-fever", LOL!

eddstarrMar 03, 2021View
