14786How was your day?
Vaporman87 wrote :

Benjanime wrote :

so after many days of work and procrastination, i have my tree up.
-end quote
Oooooh. Ahhhhh. Nicely done Ben.

I have to say, with Christmas just kind of sneaking up on me and my feeling like the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas has just been slipping away, I had not been feeling the Christmas spirit as much as I had hoped. But, last night, as I was bringing my daughter and youngest son home from their gymnastics classes, I decided to take the long way home and drive through the little town of Point Pleasant, WV.

It's possible you have heard of this town, especially if you are into cryptozoology or have read the book, or watched the film "The Mothman Prophecies". Yeah, that town. But one thing they are also known for is their knack for making the days "be merry and bright" with decor. In particular, a little campground along a small pond that is annually decked out in all manner of festive, lighted attractions.

Such things would seem pretty unimpressive in what most people deem a "small town". To me, a small town is not some town full of beautiful homes and gated communities. To me, "small town" means communities struggling to eek out an existence following the collapse of their glory days of the Industrial Revolution. Communities where most folks are living below the poverty line, and collecting their food stamps to survive. That's a "small town" where I live. So when I witness something like what is constructed every year at this small campground, it's quite easy to appreciate. Here are some images of a video I took of what we saw:

When you enter the grounds, kind folks are collecting donations (though it's not required) for the hard work that went into putting things together. It was my pleasure to do so.

Naturally, you can't have a lighting display in Point Pleasant without a Mothman in a Santa hat.

Anyway, after taking the kids through the park twice, and then slowly driving through the rest of town with all it's beautiful lights, I felt a little more of that spirit return. Funny what a little detour can do for us now and then.

-end quote
Reminds me of the Bethlehem Lights here in Allentown.

vkimoDec 20, 2014View
