1993ArticleHoju Koolander@Vaporman87 I appreciate your final thought there. This has really struck a cord on my Facebook page too, judging by the comments. Hey, if we can raise a kinder generation of kids it would be great. Otherwise we can just help our kids to deal with the inevitable times of being singled out for our differences and teach them to celebrate that. Sure I got picked on, but I never changed for other people. Eventually they appreciated who I was. OK, off my soap box now ;) @NLogan It's so cool that you had back-up all those years, great to have a partner along for the ride. Al That moving must have been rough. Your point about the possessions is pretty well founded, sometimes they would be the only constant. Feb 13, 2015View
1994ArticleHoju KoolanderThis article has taken me so long to process, such great memories. Glad I got on the Retrojunk Train during the Golden era, it was such a fun and sometimes awkward community to be a part of. I had never been "involved" in the Internet before, but supportive folks like vkimo, Cosgrove and good old' Caps 2.0 made me want to stick around. Even Dalmationlover, who irritated me in the best way possible, he was like my annoying online kid brother. I even had my one and only online dating experience, flirting and private messaging for months with one of the scarce women you spoke about in the article, which resulted in one crazy date that went like this: roller derby, Greek food and a midnight screening of A Clockwork Orange. Gee, I wonder why it didn't go anywhere? ;) But in the end it was just great to share my memories with people that could relate and appreciate my useless knowledge. I'm glad I've had the chance to reconnect with so many of you here and that vkimo's black magic ability to attract unheard of attention to his articles remains in tact. Is it goat's blood or eye of newt that does the trick?Remembering RetroJunkFeb 13, 2015View
1998ArticleHoju Koolander@vkimo Oh, you got me! The funniest part was when I went to pick her up and mispronounced her name which had a very exotic, eastern European spelling. Her Mom just gave me this look like, "You're taking my daughter out and you can't even say her name right? Good luck!" just in case you were wondering she wasn't a high school girl or anything, with the living at home deal. It's not of THOSE Internet dating stories.Remembering RetroJunkFeb 13, 2015View
2001ArticleHoju KoolanderI love the interactive nature of their marketing campaign with the whole phone message gimmick. It would be interesting to know if the OK formula ever got re-purposed for another soda in a foreign country or something.Things Are Going To Be OKFeb 16, 2015View
2013ArticleHoju KoolanderGlad to know we're not alone on this one. @Vaporman87 Yeah, talking about the "hottest babes" in school was definitely a topic during sleepovers. A lot of times we would go through the yearbook and rate the girls, but acting the encounters out with action figures is a great twist. @vkimo If only our kids could stay in the sweet, safe glow of the SNES, but alas "That Internet" comes a callin'.SleepoversFeb 17, 2015View
2021ArticleHoju Koolander@comic_book_fan Yeah, it takes kids a while to understand the power of our words. For a short time I was jokingly telling people "I'll kill your family", then my buddy started saying it and almost got pummeled by a big guy who didn't get the joke. So "kill" was quickly dropped from our comedic repertoire. @AnEarly90sMan Glad you could relate, dude. Maybe you can share some of your memories with us in an article soon. After writing about it I showed some ProStars to my sports-obsessed son and he loved it. @vkimo Quite the metaphor there, you scholar you.SleepoversFeb 18, 2015View
2024ArticleHoju KoolanderCannon Films are so important to 80's cinema...and video stores. What would have been playing on cable and Sunday afternoon TV with out the violence filled schlock they pushed out on a regular basis? Of course Masters of The Universe is their most special release to me. Yes, they disregarded everything about the cartoon that made us love it, but it's such a fun fantasy/sci-fi hybrid and inter-dimensional dwarves stealing fried chicken makes me happy. From what I understand Cyborg was created from sets, costumes and script elements planned for the MOTU sequel that never happened. Oh and the Spider-Man movie! I get such a kick out of all the promo materials and costumes they designed for it. It would have been just one step above the 70's live action TV show, but that film would have defined my childhood for sure. Fantastic article! An Ode to Cannon FilmsFeb 18, 2015View
2039ArticleHoju Koolander@massreality I really appreciate your perspective in the discussion, such interesting experiences. I always wondered how my friends dealt with those moves, I see how that struggle to connect without any hope of long-term friendships could be rough. On the other hand, life on base sounds pretty amazing. I wish my friends had invited me over to the movie screenings, that's a sweet deal! And those final days in the abandoned base must have been amazing.Military KidsFeb 22, 2015View
2056ArticleHoju Koolander@echidna64 You're welcome. The Christmas Special was actually the result of a writer's strike. The 3rd season got cut short, so they threw together all those guest stars who had been asking for a chance to be on the show into that holiday madness. @Vaporman87 Yeah, his endless death scene was about the only memorable part of that movie. 2058ArticleHoju KoolanderI think I was just way to precious about my action figures to even get close to breaking them. I do remember a few chewed MOTU figure fingers, but nothing where the whole toy came apart. The closest I got to seeing G.I. Joes break was my friend's brother who would mix and match limbs to create new mutant characters. So I guess the fact that the figures were easily dismantled was a plus to him.Toy AnnihilationMar 02, 2015View
