1254ArticleHoju KoolanderNice article. Pictures are always nice, but this is one of those unforgettable sensations you can instantly recall without them. Seeing the plastic bag poke out from behind the Rice Krispies or Cheerios was a real treat. One of my favorite cereal prizes was a similar sticky creature, I think it was called a Wacky Wall-Crawler. This one was in the shape of an Octopus. I just remember the grossness mixed with coolness of that item and the joy that lasted all of 2 minutes until it got carpet fuzz all over it. Sep 16, 2014View
1255ArticleHoju KoolanderI think what really gave Are You Afraid of the Dark the edge over Goosebumps aside from its more cerebral scares, was it's time slot. The placement at the end of SNICK programming on a Friday night around 9:30pm was perfect for that "late night" ghost story feel, while Goosebumps was on at 4pm in the afternoon. Hard to get scared when the sun is out and birds are chirping just outside your window.90's Vs: Goosebumps vs Are You Afraid of the DarkSep 16, 2014View
1260ArticleHoju KoolanderWow, this was a very extensive look at the fashion of my Junior High and High School days. I can see why it won the contest. I definitely remember all those giant patent leather shoes and glittery blue nail polish on the girls in my class. The Sanrio popularity in my town fizzled out by 1992 or so, but I was a Keroppi fan in 5th grade for sure!1995 & 1996 Fashion Trends (90's Girl Fashion) Sep 16, 2014View
1265ArticleHoju KoolanderGreat topic for an article. That Samurai Iron Man looks like a turquoise Deadpool. Oh I remember the disappointment of that New Adventures of He-Man toy line and cartoon. In retrospect it was my first experience with a re-boot where they sucked all the magic out of the characters. They might as well have called it "The Adventures of Generic Space Adventure Guy".The Curse of the VariantSep 17, 2014View
1269ArticleHoju KoolanderI'm still baffled as to why you still used the urine-soaked pieces in the final product, but that was pretty epic. People talk about the infinite uses for duct tape, but now we have to consider construction paper as a slightly more colorful and expensive alternative to sawdust or sponges. 1281ArticleHoju KoolanderInteresting theme. Among my favorite green toys growing up were my Mego Hulk doll (yes, he was a doll), Swamp Thing with the retractable arm and Yoda from the original Kenner Star Wars line. I never even noticed that the Turtles had different shades of green, what a revelation.Toys Go Green!Sep 18, 2014View
1283ArticleHoju KoolanderHa, I totally remember that Crystal Gravy parody commercial on SNL Vaporman. So wrong, but so hilarious. One of the few variation I tried back in the day was the Caffein Free version of Crystal Pepsi, because I wasn't allowed to have actual cola. It was pretty unique, but I wouldn't say good. 1311ArticleHoju Koolander@Vaporman87-You're Dad met Ric Flair? All I can say is "Whooo!" Hey contributing to MOTU is way beyond my TV appearance, people actually have your work in their collections. @NLogan-That summer crush story is great. I didn't have the technical set-up to transfer VHS and do screen caps when I wrote the Great Pretenders article all those years back, so now that I do it seemed the perfect time to create a better version of that article with visual documentation. @vkimo-I look forward to your Toni Braxton cover album dropping soon.KIDS, Incorporated: Dreams Come TrueSep 23, 2014View
1317ArticleHoju KoolanderYeah, I think I'm going to order both those books from the points store as well. Fascinating story I'm sure. There's actually a documentary called Toy Masters this guy has been trying to put out for years featuring interviews with the major players in the MOTU story. The trailer (which apparently got taken down) has one of the creators referring to the other's claims as "Pure Barbarian Fiction".
