977ArticleVaporman87Sweet! I love all these old ads. It's strange how obvious it is to us, when we see some of these, what time period these are from. EVERYTHING... from the colors and content, to the clipart and design, are almost painfully 80s. And I love it. It surprises me that marketing companies have not caught up with manufacturers, the film industry, and the gaming industry, in bringing back what worked in the 80s and 90s. One would think that having the attention of our demographic through our desire to feel nostalgia would be a great thing for marketing. Maybe that's why I'm not a marketer though. :D I always liked the gaming ads of the 80s and early 90s. They tended to try and add some form of realism to the game via the casting and photographing of somebody wearing similar clothes to the main character of the game doing some exaggerated pose. 978ArticleVaporman87You can definitely tell some of these V-day card images are taken straight out of Jim Lee's work with the X-Men. Great stuff! These would have fit right in with my choices for Valentine's Day card exchanges in school. Anything to do with super heroes and such (as I mentioned in the first part of this series). One thing I would have really enjoyed was if there were some Godzilla related Valentine's Day cards. In fact... I'm going to go look that up right now. :) Thanks again Miss M!!!For the Love of V-Day! 980ArticleVaporman87Exactly! That was the epitome of those types of ads! :D I forgot about that one.Rad Retro Ads Feb 07, 2014View
985ArticleVaporman87I noticed in that ad, that Zodac is hanging out in Snake Mountain with the baddies. They apparently were dividing them up based on the titles given them by Mattel, and not by the roles they played on the cartoon. Rad Retro Ads Feb 08, 2014View
987ArticleVaporman87You know it!!! And while we're talking about it, another thing that caught my eye was the Castle Greyskull flag. That flag was constructed by simply wrapping the sticker around the pole, and the two sides would adhere to each other. You only got ONE shot to get it right, or your flag would be messed up forever. I didn't get it right. Rad Retro Ads Feb 08, 2014View

995ArticleVaporman87That would really throw me for a loop... having the main characters killed off halfway through. But that leaves me wondering what the second half of the book focused on??? Don't fear handing out the spoilers... give us the scoop! :) Thanks again Miss M!For the Love of V-Day! Part 3Feb 10, 2014View
998ArticleVaporman87Great article pikachulover! I think this resonates with me because I was similarly inspired by He-Man and the MOTU. I would decorate my various school supplies with stickers, carry around the magazine for reference when drawing, and use the coloring books to trace, then copy to a new page without tracing. This is how I developed the ability to keep the drawings anatomically correct. Certain muscles overlap others, and some are larger in proportion to others... things like that. I never took an anatomy class in order to know how to properly draw the human musculature. He-Man helped make me capable of the art that I can do today. :)Some of my First Sailor Moon Merchandise (bootlegs)Feb 14, 2014View
1001ArticleVaporman87Those are some great Valentines cards Miss M. I would have been satisfied with just about all of them (though I was never big on Tiny Toons, my brother was more into them than I). And I especially like the attention to detail put into your card box. That is one fancy piece of work. This cracked me up: "I was essentially a fart: no one wanted anything to do with me." Still chuckling over that one. I hope your V-Day has been a great one Miss M. And thank you for all four of this series of articles on the holiday of love. For the Love of V-Day! 1015ArticleVaporman87I was never a Power Rangers fan. I think, mainly, because the whole Japanese invasion (with Pokemon, Power Rangers, etc.) came after I was already off and into college. That being said, I respect the success of this show. Few shows are able to continue capturing the attention of new generations of kids, but this is one of them. The show has cemented it's place among the the greats... He-Man, G.I. Joe, Transformers, etc. Regarding the figures, these just scream mid-90's. Everything about them reminds me of lines like those created by Toy Biz and Trendmasters. I find it hilarious that the company couldn't be bothered to give the female characters female bodies. It looks... weird. lol Thanks for this Miss M!Flipped Out for Power Rangers!Feb 21, 2014View
