5456Articleechidna64My friends group were predominantly collectors (I think we didn't fully understand the rules of the game). The Toys R Us held Pokemon TCG tournaments weekly. My goal was just to try to catch-em all. Later on I became a big fan of the Pokemon TCG on the Gameboy Color. That's where I truly learned the mechanics of the game.  Jul 07, 2021View
983ArticlepikachuloverMy friend used to have a huge crush on Gambit. I don't think I would have given X-Men cards in 1993. I usually went for something boys and girls would like. I think in 93 I either gave Tiny Toons or Marsupilami. For the Love of V-Day! Part 2Feb 07, 2014View

3764ArticleLazloMy first job in high school was as a cashier/stockperson at Eckerd Drugs. This was back in 1986. Eckerds has since been taken over by CVS, so it too is a relic of an earlier era (before working there, I remember going there with my family as a very young kid in the '70s). Those were the days. I do remember ringing up candy, cosmetics, cigarettes, meds of different sorts. One thing we didn't have was an ice cream counter though . . . interesting cylindrical look to that ice cream scoop!! 3865ArticleCaps 2.0My fear of New York City came into effect after my Dad died. He worked in the city for what was called Nynex at the time, and he would occasionally take me or my brother into the city with him to spend a day at work, after which we might do something like visit a museum or cross the Hudson River into New Jersey and attend a Giants game. My dad was a Vietnam veteran and one of the toughest, yet gentlest people I knew. He died when I was 12, and I no longer felt safe visiting the city. It didn't help that my mom, with whom I had a fractured and bitter relationship, didn't understand why I was afraid of the city. She was born and raised in the Bronx, so she strode through with no problem. Me? I was scared and still am.Retro Culture of FearApr 24, 2017View
