April 1962

The Century 21 Exposition opened its doors and the city of Seattle welcomed the world to look forward to a spectacular future.

I was five years old in 1962 and living in Norfolk, Virginia. But the appeal of the Seattle World's Fair was as universal as an episode of The Jetsons.

I was completely taken in by the optimism the 21st Century held in the minds of all the adults around me in the 1960's. There was a wonder world waiting in the next century and I was going to be a part of it all.

From 1962, the reality of the 21st Century was very, very far away.
