I lost count of the number of times I mentioned on RetroJunk the saga of Hanna-Barbera vs. Filmation after 1965.

After all these years I'm still trying to imagine the pressure H-B was under following the overwhelming success of Filmation's, "The NEW Adventures of Superman", followed quickly by every Superhero varient Filmation could get green-lit!

Superman, Aquaman, Batman, the Justice League and even the Teen Titans - by 1967 Filmation was in charge of Saturday Mornings across TV America!

What in the world was Hanna-Barbera to do?  Anything and Everything!!!

From 1966 to 1969, H-B was throwing every idea they had at the Big-3 networks. "Shazzan" the Super Genie, "Moby Dick" the Super Whale, "Mighty Mightor" the Super Caveman, "The Herculoids" Super Whatever!; no idea was out of bounds.

1969, the same year as "Scooby-Doo", brought us "The Cattnooga Cats" and pop song envy to the point that the Cattnooga Cats functioned as their own filler cartoon with musical numbers trying to play catch-up with "The Archies" and the number one song of the year, "Sugar, Sugar".

Betcha you remember "Dastardly and Muttley in their Flying Machines", and the filler was "Magnificent Muttley", featuring his daydreaming adventures!

I mostly remember the "Stop the Pigeon " song in the Flying Machines cartoon.

"Stop That Pigeon NOW!" Wow, Hanna-Barbera had a tough time livin' that one down.

Here's one from 1965 that my friends liked a lot more than I did. The problem for me was the humor of the episodes didn't quite match the humor of the intro. Anyway, it might not matter. I don't recall this cartoon making it to syndication on local TV, but maybe it ran on one of the cable services?

The filler cartoon is, "Fearless Fly":

And the main show was, "Milton the Monster" (season approiate don't cha think?)
