Every week "TV Guide" would appear in our mailbox. My family had a subscription for years but it wasn't until 1969 that I started reading the articles and that's where I first learned about a strange story. "Perry Mason" came to life because of Raymond Burr. As a kid I thought Raymond Burr was Perry Mason - the two were melded as one. A TV Guide article was the hint that Raymond Burr hated playing Perry Mason and in later life, Burr blamed Perry Mason for destroying his acting career - audiences would accept Burr in any other role. It saddens me now to know how much Burr hated "that lawyer", but he's soooo good as Perry Mason! From it's premiere in 1957, Perry Mason's guest stars were a "Who's Who" of American television. Here's an interesting clip from Perry Mason. You might recognize the woman on the witness stand from Star Trek-the Original Series. But if you look close you will see another young woman who also guest starred on ST TOS.

I know Robert Reed really hated playing Mike Brady. In fact, when Paramount hired Gary Cole to play the character in The Brady Bunch Movie, he was apparently easier to work with. |

Hey bluedude, you got me thinking about one of the reasons Robert Reed hated playing Mike Brady. Robert Reed landed the role of a lifetime - co-starring with E.G.Marshall in the hit TV series, "The Defenders" on CBS in 1961. This was the type of show actors kill for - a chance to outshine Perry Mason! Yet another clip featuring familiar actors who made careers of guest apperances before landing in their own television shows - no introductions needed: |
