Strange. Soon after I posted a video about Ritchie Valens in another thread on this forum, I found out that the guitarist who avoided the infamous plane crash that took the lives of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper has passed away at 85. Allsup was supposed to be on that plane, but he lost his seat after a coin toss with Ritchie Valens.

I remember Waylon Jennings was supposed to be on that plane too but he ended up giving up his seat voluntarily to the Big Bopper who was coming down with the flu. Waylon would feel guilty about it for decades because after the coin flip he jokingly told Buddy Holly "Well, I hope your plane crashes" after Buddy jokingly told him "I hope your bus freezes up" The guilt from the plane crash caused him to develop a substance abuse problem.

I've heard that, too. I really can't imagine how it would have felt to be so close to getting on that plane only to have someone else end up in your place.
