As you watch this clip keep in mind that the crew only signed up for a single tour of duty. The expectation is that they will return home to their families and friends.

What do you think after this happens? Where is home now? Does "home" even exist?

That clip is from Season One of Star Trek: The Next Generation in an episode called, "Where No One Has Gone Before". This episode has an amazing moment where Wesley Crusher asks the "Traveler" if Space, Time and Thought are not the separate things they appear to be.

Interesting that in my own life this idea of connectivity has been raised many times, going all the way back to my earliest memories.

That's why the slow development of Virtual Reality is so interesting to me. Anyone involved with VR knows that it is just one piece in a much larger puzzle. Another piece is what some folks call Augmented Reality, sort of a mash-up of Real Life with VR. Yet another piece to this puzzle is called Mixed Reality, where VR is integrated into RL seamlessly and you can interact with in, not just look at it.

Other pieces out there include: "The Internet of Things" and "Autonomy" as well as others.

All of this is developing as if we will be the ones putting the puzzle together and will control the resulting assembly. That's a comforting thought, do you believe that too? I can't help but wonder if this is just the early stages of "A New Reality", a total integration of VR and RL.

But I still wonder if the world of A New Reality is one where we are in control, or only think we are?
