He did set the bar high on what on a teen movie should be like.  Most teen movies today can't even hit the mark that he set.  When he make Sixteen Candles and movies like it he did it in the voice of the teen themselves and didn't try to make it like they were adults.  That is why his movies hold up even today because teens face the same struggles today just in different ways.
