Clash of the Titans (1981)

A superb Greek mythology adventure flick with a clever mechanical owl.

It's easy to love a movie like this.

5 stars.

Do I dare watch the remake? I dunno. I'm pretty skeptical about it.

Hell yeah! Fantastic movie! Forget the remake and watch The 7th Voyage of Sinbad instead if you want a mythology fix

Sounds tempting. I'll be sure to check it out.

Just concluded my MCU marathon last night with "Thor: Ragnarok".

A HUGE improvement over the first two movies. The performances as always are excellent and I loved the scene with Thor meeting and battling the Hulk. Overall, this movie "ragna-rocks".

5 out of 5.

Beowulf

It's not bad, really. The action is solid and the animation is simply beautiful. It's almost like it's not animation.

Robert Zemeckis triumphs as usual.

5 stars.

Mr. Vampire (1985)

I went into this not having any expectations. After all, how good can a horror comedy from 80s Hong Kong be?

Pretty damn good, as it turns out. The jokes are actually pretty funny, and there's some impressive physical stunts and special effects. As a bonus, I even learned about Chinese vampires (tl, dr: sticky rice will help cure a vampire bite!)

Watch this movie. I give it three cups of blood and two bags of popcorn!

Fiddler on the Roof

The non-animated musical genre is starting to grow on me. There's some very good songs in this one like "Tradition" and "If I Were a Rich Man" And the story is appealing. I can see why this musical was a big hit.

Too many stars for this one.

Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

So we caught this during the week, and it was pretty good. I mean, the action is fun and there are some playful scenes that pay homage to the originals. But all in all this feels like a story that didn't need to be told. It doesn't really feel necessary. It reminds me of a pretty typical conversation my wife and my kids have when she cooks them something new:

Wife: "Here, try this."

Kids: "Mmm. Pretty good."

Wife: "Want some more?"

Kids: "Nah."

It's one of those films that you watch once and then totally forget about. No wonder it's dropping like an anvil off a skyscraper.

Haha, great dinner analogy Vapor.

Black Panther (2017)

I thought this was great! Loved the story, although I find the Black Panther's abilities so typical I really enjoyed the African angle. The final fight was terrible but all in all a good movie.

3.5/5

Cargo (2017)

This was a Netflix original about a guy infected with some zombie plague trying to tote his infant to safety, a very heavy, almost burdensome experience...watching the movie, not him carrying the baby in an ergo.

Avengers: Infinity War

Wow! This movie fires on all cylinders and never lets up! Thanos is great and it's amazing how they interwove all of these characters and worlds into one coherent and satisfying film. My only complaint is that in the near three-hour runtime, it does feel bloated, some of the side-missions don't really payoff and feel more like filler until Infinity War Part II comes out.

Ebony Maw, Thanos' wizard friend, was a surprisingly effective villain with some cool onscreen moments.

The ending is shocking in a good way as it basically throws the entire Marvel playbook out the window.

I'd give it a 4/5

I agree, the first confrontation between T'Challa and Killmonger on the waterfall was so much more thrilling than the tensionless final fight between the CGI cat-people.

Police Academy

It is what it is:

Cheesy.

As Homer would put it, the guy who made the sound effects stole the show.

I give the film 3 stars.
