| 2542 | Article | Vaporman87 | I have to say, I wasn't aware that films like this had their own genre... Heavy Metal-sploitation. But it certainly fits. This undoubtedly tapped into a lot of frustration and angst being felt by young fans of Heavy Metal, and kids who've been on the receiving end of a bully's wrath. I was one of those kids too. I was probably one of the shortest kids in my school, and an art nerd at that. So I can relate. Somehow, I managed to steer clear of confrontation for the most part. Sure, there was the occasion when my books were knocked out of my hands from behind, or the stupid "Made Ya Flinch!" fake punch that meant you had to receive a raised knuckle pounding to the arm (seriously... for having good reflexes?), but I kept to myself and away from those I knew might cause me trouble. I can see a movie like this helping to cope with all that. Nowadays, there is such an anti-bully movement going on that such things are borderline criminal. Which, I suppose, is a good thing. But it does make one wonder how prepared kids will be when they face that sort of thing in "real life". You need to know how to face confrontation in life, and how to avoid it. | 2548 | Article | Vaporman87 | I absolutely picked up on this phenomena, even in my youth. This was especially prevalent when stations would air back-to-back episodes from completely different seasons. The characters would seem totally out of whack. This was such a fun read. I liked this line: "Sure, he won, but that's not really something that should boost the kid's confidence, y'know? It's like giving People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive cover to the St. Bernard from the Beethoven movies." Sometimes the character development would go in a different direction too. Maybe a character would become more bossy or become the "leader". Sometimes one character would begin to become the focus of the show, leaving other characters with the crumbs. These types of blatant changes would sometimes annoy me. Other times, it might seem to suit the direction of the show. I suppose the cast and crew of a show don't really know what the audience will respond to better until it's been on the air for a while. That is what was so nice about growing up in a small neighborhood... with houses all crammed together in close proximity. You knew everyone, and everyone knew you. You knew what to look out for... what to be suspicious of. We weren't as apt to go frolicking around in everyone's yards (except those that we frequented by invite), but it was normal for kids to be up and down the road on every manner of transit (bike, wagon, minibike, dirt bike, etc.). This reminds me a lot of times spent in that neighborhood where I grew up. I have a lot of ties here in R-town, but I didn't spend my formative years here. To visit that little addition is like stepping on holy ground. I don't go there often, because now I would only be a stranger entering somebody else's world. I've mentioned this in the forum and on one of massreality's articles; that I grew up in a small addition of homes and at the bottom of the hill sat our skating rink. So I walked up and down our hill almost every weekend to hang out at the rink. I still know who were expert skaters, I still hear the music playing and the sound of the arcade games (Galaga and Ms. Pac-Man being the most played ones). I can smell the hotdogs and old, worn carpeting on the benches. I can easily remember the tiny bathroom, and games we'd play (corner skate, limbo, the hokey pokey, etc.). Even so, their biggest icon of all has always had a special place in my heart. Of course I'm talking about General Tsao's chicken. No, really... Godzilla. I was thoroughly entranced by anything Godzilla related as a kid. I LOVED the movies, even though they were incredibly cheesy. Any time I caught one of the films on television (usually after I was supposed to be asleep or on Saturday afternoons), I left the channel changer alone and stuck around 'til the end.
