1562ArticleHoju KoolanderReally fun ride you took us on. I loved the KISS pinball metaphor (KISS Army unite!) and the fact that reading Christmas themed comics was part of getting you in the spirit of the season puts a smile on my face. You know the Ultimate Warrior (R.I.P.) fought Santa Claus in comic book form too...it was pretty messed up. Dec 02, 2014View
1571ArticleHoju KoolanderYeah, pull out those photos! I've seen that last picture for years and never noticed the Mr. T figure hiding in there. Who knows what you'll find.Holi-Daze: Toys UnwrappedDec 05, 2014View
1572ArticleHoju KoolanderLoving your pen name. I once spent a lonely holiday season evening at a movie theater attending a special retro screening of Christmas Vacation. It was a 10pm show and I literally had the theater to myself. The staff kept coming in to see if there was anyone in the theater because they wanted to go home, but like Clark, I stood my ground in the name of Christmas...or I didn't have anything better to do. 1587ArticleHoju Koolander@NLogan I almost referenced the Big Trouble In Little China Raiden/Rayden, he was always featured in the Saturday afternoon commercials for local TV broadcasts of the movie. I never knew about the different spellings or the breakdown in the original Japanese. Cool! @Vaporman87 Typing letters to magazines/newspapers, the original comments section! I bet your letter was infamous around the EGM offices. Scorpion was always my favorite guy as well. I had an obsession with grappling hooks, so his weapon of choice gave him instant status with me. Speaking of which, correction in the second to last paragraph: Johnny Cage fought Scorpion, not Liu Kang. Those freakin' colorful ninjas...Mortal Kombat MemoriesDec 10, 2014View
1607ArticleHoju KoolanderThat's an awesome introduction to the world of comic books, nice story. Image comics were pretty disposable to me, but the toys were the best. That first Spawn figure changed the game entirely. I had a few WildC.A.T.S. figures myself, in fact I made an "action figure movie" starring Maul and Hellspont with our family video camera. But Grifter definitely had the best design.Christmas of 1994 Dec 11, 2014View
1608ArticleHoju KoolanderGreat, feel good story. Spinja stress, has to be the best kind.I remember well the tales of elusive toys only available in another state where friends had just visited or used to live. For that reason I always made my parents stop at a toy store when we were out of town, just in case. It is awesome that your parents tried at least.1990 - The Year Santa DiedDec 11, 2014View
1619ArticleHoju Koolander@NLogan Seriously, amazing photo analysis skills. Do you work for a secret retro-toy wing of the FBI?Holi-Daze: Toys UnwrappedDec 11, 2014View
1638ArticleHoju Koolander@vkimo I never knew you were such a Batman devotee. Did you attach this velcro bat-symbol or did you buy it that way? I am intrigued. @Vaporman87 glad you can back me up on this. Speaking of Batmania, there was a VHS that came out around this time called "Holy Batmania!" covering the phenomenon. My copy no longer plays, but I remember this segment of Adam West as Batman at some rinky-dink fan event giving it his all to entertain. It was sad and inspiring at the same time. Interesting that you had Mantis, he came at the end of the line when Kenner started throwing in lesser known characters, just because they had cool designs or making up new ones altogether. @thecrow174 Yeah, the return of Indiana Jones and Ghostbusters in '89 were just some the highlights, I wonder if we will get a year like that in the 21st century. 1641ArticleHoju Koolander@NLogan Yeah, those variations in the Batman and Joker head sculpts are so interesting: square jaw, round jaw, Joker with double hair curl. Glad you got to enjoy so many parts of this moment in time. @thecrow174 Maybe we just need a little perspective. A decade from now we might be saying 2015 was the year of all-time classic films and blockbuster hits. Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 is coming out next year after all ;)Batman '89 RememberedDec 15, 2014View
1644ArticleHoju KoolanderBeing born in '82 I missed the initial E.T. phenomenon, but I did somehow end up with a stuffed animal that had a leather like texture to simulate his alien skin. Such a weird choice for a "cuddly" toy. Right there with you on recording to tape! I personally commandeered every cassette recording device in my house to record old-timey radio dramas, morning drive comedy shows and NPR style interview segments. For Christmas a few years ago my sister got me a brand new tape recorder and some blank tapes to pay tribute to my old hobby. To echo Vaporman87, I can only hope my kids care enough to listen to my childhood ramblings. I will look forward to their reviews. My Christmas 1982Dec 15, 2014View
