Article | echidna64 | My favorite depiction of NY in the 80's is from the Ninja Turtles movies lol Things were pretty bad back then, nowadays you simply can't afford to live there if you make less than 100K | Apr 24, 2017 | ![]() |
Article | Caps 2.0 | My fear of New York City came into effect after my Dad died. He worked in the city for what was called Nynex at the time, and he would occasionally take me or my brother into the city with him to spend a day at work, after which we might do something like visit a museum or cross the Hudson River into New Jersey and attend a Giants game. My dad was a Vietnam veteran and one of the toughest, yet gentlest people I knew. He died when I was 12, and I no longer felt safe visiting the city. It didn't help that my mom, with whom I had a fractured and bitter relationship, didn't understand why I was afraid of the city. She was born and raised in the Bronx, so she strode through with no problem. Me? I was scared and still am. | Retro Culture of Fear | Apr 24, 2017 | ![]()
Article | Vaporman87 | You know, maybe I'm wrong and remember things incorrectly, but it seems like that even though nowadays comic book heroes are the cat's meow for everyone on Earth, the amount of promotional material using their likenesses is actually not as prevalent. Am I wrong? | Spider-Man Food Ads of the 90's | Apr 23, 2017 | ![]()
Article | Hoju Koolander | You're right. I mean Marvel still has a lot of their movie characters on Doritos, Skittles and even Kleenex boxes around the time of movie release dates, but those are movie tie-ins, not the illustrated comic book characters promoting Go-Gurt for example. You see The Avengers everywhere, but it's like movie concept art. Meanwhile the original inspirations for the live action adventures are relegated to dollar store merchandise, it's a sad state of affairs indeed. | Spider-Man Food Ads of the 90's | Apr 24, 2017 | ![]()
Article | mickyarber | Through working at a grocery store throughout the 90's,I remember just about all of this stuff. The McDonald's toys are foreign to me, but the rest I have at least a recollection of. The Spiderman pasta always sold really well. Keep the old advertising, especially the food advertising, coming. | Spider-Man Food Ads of the 90's | Apr 24, 2017 | ![]()
Article | Vaporman87 | Ahh. So I'm guessing Marvel's dislike for the character spawned a name change to Miracle Man? There are so many great characters from the early days of comics that haven't seen the light of day in decades. My wife once purchased me a book that listed some of the worst comic villains ever created, and many of them were from comics I'd never heard of from the 50's. | The Secret Origin of Miracleman, Pt.1! | Apr 23, 2017 | ![]()
Article | Hoju Koolander | Thanks for giving MarvelMan/MiracleMan some love. I have have the 1st printings of issues 1-6 in my collection and they are fantastic. So engaging and truly twisted take on what the Captain Marvel concept could be. I'm looking forward to Part 2 because that's where the the story really gets convoluted as far as rights ownership, with Todd Mcfarlane himself getting into the mix. | The Secret Origin of Miracleman, Pt.1! | Apr 24, 2017 | ![]()
Article | jkatz | You guys are getting waaay ahead of me -_- But yeah, all that and more will be covered in upcoming installments. | The Secret Origin of Miracleman, Pt.1! | Apr 24, 2017 | ![]()
Article | Vaporman87 | I can think of no other musical concert that was so popular and watched by as many people. It was all anyone talked about, at least as it pertained to music or musicians. | Remembering Live Aid (1985) | Apr 23, 2017 | ![]()
Article | Lazlo | Vaporman87- I remember I spent a large part of that day listening to the concert over the radio, until the television networks started coverage during the evening. To me, it was an important event for our generation. A very memorable '80s event. | Remembering Live Aid (1985) | Apr 23, 2017 | ![]()
