278 | Video | Vaporman87 | It's a show ahead of it's time. Get it! Ahead of it's time... and it takes place in the future! Don't judge me. | Feb 08, 2013

2622 | Article | Vaporman87 | I think, for myself, I ended up preferring the shows in which the family was a whole. I'm guessing that is because my own family went through a divorce in my early teens, and I just wanted to feel stability. I would catch the Cosby's, Brady's, and others for sure. But I really enjoyed Family Ties the most. They always stuck with each other, even though they were all so different. And you never felt like there was a lack of love for anyone. | Growing Up Brady | Sep 09, 2015
2640 | Article | kidcoffee | I almost forgot about Family Ties. For shame, but even still it was always about the Bradys for me. I think that may have to do more with the Bradys overly saccharine sweet approach to life whereas Family Ties was far more realistic with their approach. This made for a much better show, but my younger self desperate to escape reality would cling to the Brady Bunch for dear life. Also already being in syndication meant I could visit with the Brady kids far more often which to me was everything. Not that I didn't love my once a week visits with the Keatons, but they were so few and far between. Just when I felt myself warming up to the likes of Alex and Mallory I found myself ripped away forced once again to wait impatiently to find out what happened next. | Growing Up Brady | Sep 11, 2015
2641 | Article | Vaporman87 | Yeah, that was the difficulty of being a fan of shows not yet in syndication. I do think that some channels would show multiple episodes of the show from past seasons. Like maybe the earlier seasons were entered into syndication, while the first run shows airing. Still, the Brady's were great. Like you said, the saccharine nature of the show made you feel good inside, even when they were having issues. Kind of like the shows from the 50's and early 60's, everyone happy with their roles in life, never anything too stressful going on. People are always friendly, if not a bit nosy. Mayberryesque, if you will. | Growing Up Brady | Sep 13, 2015
2621 | Article | Vaporman87 | I think this may be my favorite article of yours so far. You're so right. It's not about the shows or commercials themselves. Like you said, they can be watched at any point on YouTube (and in some cases, HERE!) But to find all those other little details... local ads, local station promos, etc. And then to watch them all just as they aired together, like for a moment your TV has stepped back in time and is showing you what was on at any given moment, somewhere in the US. Then you start to wonder what the person recording the tape was thinking or doing while watching these shows and such play out. What was the purpose? What shows were they hoping to capture the most? Where is that person now? There just so much wrapped up in the simple act of watching the old recordings of someone else. I have a feeling Caps has extensive experience with this, as all of his video submissions seem to come from these types of recordings, local ads and all. | VHS Television Treasure Hunt | Sep 09, 2015
2623 | Article | onipar | Ah, thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Yes, all of those feelings, thoughts, and questions that come along with a viewing of an old recording is wonderful. I'm sad to say almost all of my personal recordings and home movies have long ago succumbed to mold. :-( | VHS Television Treasure Hunt | Sep 09, 2015
2624 | Article | Vaporman87 | Yeah, that sucks. I have many VHS recordings from days past, most of them home movies but some recordings of things like Saturday Night Live, NBA games, and the like. | VHS Television Treasure Hunt | Sep 09, 2015
2625 | Article | Caps 2.0 | Well, as Vapor alluded to, I do have a lot of experience with this. It all started back on RetroJunk, when I frequently came across cool commercials and trailers on YouTube that I thought belonged on RetroJunk. I didn't start giving credit to the original uploaders until 2008. In 2009, I got the Pinnacle video editing program, and so I started taking commercials from the DVDs I had purchased. Unfortunately, a lot of the recordings wouldn't move until I purchased the CloneDVD program. As for why I enjoy vintage broadcasts, and the commercials contained therein, it's because I did a lot of recording on VHS tapes well into my 20s. I ended up taping over a lot of the stuff I recorded in the 1980s, including a lot of amazing Disney specials that I regret recording over. I've since found a lot of them on websites that sell recordings with original commercials, and it's been fun. | VHS Television Treasure Hunt | Sep 09, 2015 |
