You use the top to push it into the bottle, and the glass is shaped to hold the marble. Jon Voight did an amazing job being a despicable person who ends up crushed in this movie, and you're SOOOO glad to see it happen by the end. And James Van Der Beek's career kind of went nowhere after this. I think, as you mention, his performance is so bad that it ended up becoming an internet meme. What really made me laugh though, was the scene with the feet walking down a flight of stairs. That EXACT SAME scene was filmed for one of our home movies back in the day. Same angle and everything.
