1415 | Article | Hoju Koolander | Good stuff, Mike. It's crazy that the syndicated cartoons in the morning and afternoons co-existed for so long with the Saturday Morning cartoon block, but I suppose this was inevitable. That said, you hit on some of my favorites: Beetlejuice, Camp Candy and those Sunkist commercials are instant nostalgia for me. As for some of the others, I have a Hammerman VHS tape packed away somewhere (yes, it's terrible) and I bought the complete series of Hey Vern, It's Ernest for $5 at Wal-Mart a while back, I like to put it on while I'm cleaning the house on Saturday mornings. | Oct 09, 2014
1421 | Article | Hoju Koolander | @pikachulover That's crazy. All those trips to the Halloween Haunt, I thought for sure you would have had some sort of annual pass to Movieland Wax Museum. Chupacapra by the train tracks sounds like a great legend. Were there any goats there for him to snack on or just McNuggets? @NLogan I only know the Marvel comics version of Wendigo who fought the Hulk (and Wolverine in his first appearance), I'll have to check out the original version. My favorite was always "The Ghost with the Bloody Fingers". Nice list of wax memories, I remember being impressed that Michael Jackson had a whole room devoted to himself with a figure in his "Bad" outfit and they played his music videos from that album on a loop. | Scary Stories from the Schoolyard | Oct 13, 2014
1422 | Article | Hoju Koolander | @Fulton4V I personally have always held Super Powers as the high standard for 80's action figures. From the sculpts, to the box art to the sheer number of characters, it was a beautiful line of toys. I still have my Superman, Batman, Robin, Aquaman and Lex Luthor! | The Mini & The Mighty | Oct 13, 2014
1432 | Article | Hoju Koolander | @NLogan Wow, that is an impressive and costly collection. You may be the only person who bought Hulk 180 and 181 for The Wendigo appearance, LOL. @Vaporman I wanna see those catfish, freaky! By the way, I called my Dad last night to confirm the first story about the haunted house, he said it was 100% true. Apparently the people that did buy it years later totally remodeled it to eliminate any connection to the deceased owners and possible haunting...crazy. | Scary Stories from the Schoolyard | Oct 14, 2014
1442 | Article | Hoju Koolander | Sometimes those "hodge podge" costumes can turn out to be the most special. My best friend created a character called "Rakeman" over several years of participating in haunted yards/garages. I loved the idea so much, I eventually made a very no-budget (and it shows) horror-comedy about the character, fleshing out the Rakeman's back story and adding my own flare to it. 1443 | Article | Hoju Koolander | Affordable video games at a Pharmacy? No wonder they went out of business! That's pretty sweet that your Mom got discounts for a while. If I had a family member working at a pharmacy in the 90's, I would have definitely hit them up for a discount on the latest Marvel Universe trading cards. | A Grand Day Out | Oct 16, 2014
1476 | Article | Hoju Koolander | @pikachulover The idea of doing the nice clown and evil clown in succession is awesome. I agree the the sexy costumes have become so overdone, that they actually produce the opposite effect, they're boring. Much more impressive to me is when someone really works on the details and character, even if the costume is not the best in terms of construction. Their commitment to the concept makes all the difference. | Frilly and Scary | Oct 21, 2014
1477 | Article | Hoju Koolander | These are all familiar posters/VHS boxes, though surprisingly I've only seen Dead Alive. Taking a break from a rehearsal with my high school garage band in '99, our bassist put it on and all I can say is I've never seen so much orange tinted "blood" in my life. When the guy straps on a lawnmower and starts walking through ghouls/zombies it just gets ridiculous. | Benjanime's Top Ten Halloween Movie Picks | Oct 21, 2014
1489 | Article | Hoju Koolander | I'm with you on the managers. They only functioned well when they were acting as cheaters to make the heels/bad guys look that much more evil (Bobby Heenan was king!). but when a face/good guy had a manager (Jimmy Hart with Hulk Hogan) it was pointless because their whole job became acting as a hype machine for a character that was already loved. Kind of redundant. | When Wrestling Rocked | Nov 04, 2014
1492 | Article | Hoju Koolander | That's a good point, pikachulover. The Attitude era definitely pumped life back into the WWE in a big way. I personally feel like they are still coasting on that popularity. But the difference I think was that the 80's era was universally accessible because it was classic good vs evil, while the Attitude era was bad vs evil. Though it was a small percentage, I think there was a potential audience that was being alienated at that time. | When Wrestling Rocked | Nov 05, 2014 |
