Wolverine a Reader's Perspective Part 13

THE WOLVERINE!

Art by John Byrne

Chronological Wolverine facts as revealed to the reader part XIII

Continuing our journey to understand the Wolverine character as was revealed to the reader issue by issue, and month to month through his publication history. So from a reader's perspective here is Logan's history, who he was, and how and when we learned it!

Jan 1980
THE UNCANNY X-MEN 129
Writers: Chris Claremont and John Byrne
Penciller: John Byrne

We saw earlier in Japan that Wolverine can conduct himself honorably with Mariko and was regarded by Shiro with much respect, this time we see his manners on display in the home of Kitty Pryde as the X-Men are meeting her and her parents for the first time.

In the background Logan is "reading" a Hustler magazine much to the chagrin of the shop owner. Peter pure-heart is also catching a glimpse. He may not be that pure-hearted, remember that he invited Wolverine to go hang out with two native women in the Savage Land, one of whom was topless!*

*It happened back in Uncanny X-Men 114, see Wolverine a Reader's Perspective Part 8 -NLogan

After finishing perusing the Hustler, Logan has started into a Penthouse magazine and the owner has had enough. The X-Men's socializing gets interrupted by goons in armored suits hell-bent on capturing the X-Men.

Wolverine quickly surmises that each suit is designed to counter each X-Man's specific powers. Switching opponents they quickly trash the goons.

We learn that the X-Men have been taught defensive psychic techniques by Professor X and Phoenix, but the telepathic ambush is too powerful and the X-Men are overcome and captured.

Feb 1980
THE UNCANNY X-MEN 130
Writers: Chris Claremont and John Byrne

Because the last issue followed Professor X, Colossus, Wolverine, and Storm searching out one of the mutants detected by Cerebro i.e. Kitty Pryde, this issue follows Cyclops, Phoenix, and Nightcrawler searching for the second mutant Alison Blaire the Dazzler. Wolverine is only shown briefly as a captive in a cage in two panels, so not much character development here. However speaking of briefs we learn that Peter pure-heart wears tighty whities and Logan wears stylish black briefs.

Mar 1980
THE UNCANNY X-MEN 131
Writers: Chris Claremont and John Byrne
Penciller: John Byrne

We see here the first indication of a retcon but at least this one makes sense. Back in X-Men issue 108 we were told that Wolverine had about 70 kilos mass or about 154 lbs body weight*. That would be about accurate for a muscular athletic build for his height. However, now that we know his bones are made of Adamantium* that metal has to weigh something, doesn't it? Kitty notices that Wolverine is a lot heavier than he looks.

*See Wolverine a Reader's Perspective Part 6 for the Starjammer Skimmer's sensor scan of Wolverine, and Wolverine a Reader's Perspective Part 12 for his skeleton being made of Adamantium -NLogan

Later we find out that Wolverine dealt with those guards and knowing him that probably means permanently.

Until next time, make sure you have clean undies because you never know when you will be caught by bad guys and paraded around for all to see until you are rescued.
