Garfield's Halloween Adventure

Halloween is almost here, so that got me thinking about the Halloween Specials I used to watch when I was a kid. I, like most people, will first remember It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown which originally debuted in 1966, but has aired every year since then. There was another lesser known special that premiered in the 80s which I also remember and that is the special I will cover in this issue.Garfield

Garfield's Halloween AdventureGarfield's Halloween Adventurepremiered on October 30, 1985. This animated special follows everybody's favorite lasagna-loving (and evidently candy-loving) orange cat as he decides to go trick-or-treating. This special which would win the Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program in 1986 features Lorenzo Music as the distinctive voice of Garfield as well as songs provided by Lou Rawls. The songs are what really seem to make this special memorable to me. Here is a video which includes the those musical numbers from Garfield's Halloween Adventure...

Candy, candy, candy. It seems that CBS has not aired this special since 2000, Garfield & Odiebut it is available on DVD and you can watch the entire show through YouTube as well. I showed it to my daughter who had no previous exposure to the Garfield character a couple years ago and she really enjoyed the Halloween special. I did go purchase the DVD and added it to our two other animated Halloween traditions, It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown and Winnie the Pooh: Boo To You Too. It is nice to have something from the 80s to add to the collection.

You can find many more great 80s memories at my normal blog Kickin' it Old School so I hope you stop by and visit often. You can also check out our Facebook page & follow us on Twitter @OldSchool80s. HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

(Bonus) Quotes of the day: Just Linusgave you a whole bunch of them in the Check This Out section, but here is one more for good measure...
"There are three things I have learned never to discuss with people: religion, politics and the Great Pumpkin." -Linus from It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

If you like that one, here is one more from Linus...
"Never jump into a pile of leaves with a wet sucker."

Thanks all for reading. Love the Fat Albert Halloween special, but that one first came out in 1977 and I try to stay in the 80s (though I still remember watching it in the 80s, so that counts!)

Well, this Garfield special is one I wish I had seen. Boy, have I been missing out.

See Fat Albert's Halloween special. It's a good one.

LOL. I wonder how many parents were aghast at hearing what they THOUGHT they heard.

I always thought that Garfield's voice was soooo appropriate for the character. Lorenzo Music did a great job with it.

i never really saw this special as a kid, but i recall hearing about people talk about a certain quote, when garfield and odie sight the old man in the chair and run around, they said that it sounded as if garfield yelled "AAAAH RUN F*** IT!" when it's actually "AAAAH RUN FOR IT!" this misheard quote was due to the fact that garfield's voice was a little echoed as it was heard in background

Reading this reminded me that I did not add a scene from this special into the Halloween Special this year. Crud. Oh well, just one to make sure to add next year! :)

I think it's hard for some of these other specials to get the play they deserve, because so many people expect to be shown The Great Pumpkin, or Merry Christmas Charlie Brown, etc.

Perhaps we need a cable channel that plays nothing but holiday specials and tv episodes at certain times during the year. I'd go for that.

Thanks OldSchool
